Department of Urban Environment Systems Overview

The modern urban environment has various problems - community, housing, landscape, depopulation, disaster prevention, garbage, recycling, environmental pollution, communication networks, road networks, water resources, energy and so on. On the other hand, cities are changing with the times due to urban regeneration efforts and advanced information networks. In this course, we aim to train integrated designers, engineers and researchers who have advanced expertise in these problems and situations, who comprehensively understand the urban environment from both the technology and design aspects, and who play an active role with a firm sense of ethics and creativity.
In this course, there are four areas: Urban Space Planning,Urban Infrastructure Engineering,Urban Environmental Engineering,Urban Information Engineering,These four areas are linked each other to constitute comprehensive urban environment systems studies.

Social needs

Students who graduated from this course will become advanced experts and all-round designers working in urban/housing-related government/public enterprises, urban-development-related companies such as land developers, construction companies, design offices, consultant offices, environmental companies dealing with waste and energy, electrical equipment manufacturers, computer companies, and information communications companies.

Features of educational program

The Department of Urban Environment Systems has the following two features:
1.We established “Urban Environmental System Studies” to tackle urban problems from an engineering viewpoint, with a consistent educational system from undergraduate to doctoral level.
2.To establish a new field of study, a program that combines expertise and interdisciplinarity is required. For this purpose, to cover the main subjects in education and research, we created a course that forms the backbone of urban environmental systems to deepen expertise, as well as cross-disciplinary studies dealing with complex subjects to foster an all-round perspective.

Features of Master’s Program

Emphasis on 6-year education from undergraduate level to the first term of the doctoral course (Master’s Program)

In view of the strong desire for students to find a job at a company, government or consultant after completing the Master’s Program, emphasis is placed on 6 years of continuous education.

Interdisciplinary and comprehensive education

Expertise is deepened through core modules corresponding to the main subjects in education and research, and at the same time, highly interdisciplinary education is provided through combined modules taught collectively by several teachers to train human resources with an all-round perspective.

Initiation of social problem studies

Subjects of high social interest (declining birthrate and the aging society, disaster mitigation and safety, resource-saving, etc.) are selected, and after lectures are given by several lecturers from various viewpoints, a program is set up to deepen research.

Features of Doctoral Program

This program is aimed mainly at those who completed the Master’s Program or have come from other university graduate schools. We focus on developing human resources that balance high-level research/planning ability with all-round knowledge. Specifically, from the four areas ofUrban Space Planning,Urban Infrastructure Engineering,Urban Environmental Engineering,Urban Information Engineering, students can choose one area in addition to their specialized research subject so as to acquire comprehensive and advanced knowledge.
